CWS Window Replacement: The Westchester Owner’s Guide

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS makes several window lines that show up in Westchester homes, and the replacement parts are not universally interchangeable. The most common series we service are the CWS 400 and CWS 500 single-hung and horizontal roller windows, along with the CWS 9000 impact-rated line that many homeowners installed after Hurricane Andrew-era code changes.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: CWS 400 series sashes will not fit CWS 500 frames, even if the glass measurements match. You have to look for the label. Open the window and check the top edge of the sash or the side jamb. CWS stamps a series number and a manufacturing date code there. If the label is faded or painted over, measure the sash thickness. The 400 series runs 1-3/8 inches thick, the 500 series runs 1-1/2 inches, and the 9000 impact series runs thicker still. Five minutes with a tape measure saves you from ordering the wrong part.

On OEM versus aftermarket: genuine CWS replacement parts are the safest choice for any window under a transferable warranty. But for older Westchester installations where the warranty has long expired, a quality aftermarket balance system or roller assembly often performs identically at roughly 30 percent less. Signs Your CWS Window Replacement Is Failing

• Sash won’t stay up. The block-and-tackle balance springs inside the jamb have lost tension or snapped. This is the single most common failure we see in Westchester, because humidity and salt air eat at the spring coils over time.
• Condensation between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. Once the argon or krypton gas leaks out, the window loses its insulating value and you get permanent fogging. The fix is a new IGU, not a new window frame.
• Crank handle spins without moving the sash. The operator gear inside the crank mechanism has stripped. CWS casement operators use a die-cast zinc gear that wears down after years of use, especially on windows that face the afternoon sun.
• Window won’t close square or latches loosely. The rollers on a sliding window have flat-spotted, or the frame has shifted slightly from settling. A loose latch is a security problem and an energy leak, not just a nuisance.
• Drafts or visible daylight around the sash edges. The weatherstripping has compressed or the sash has warped in the heat. Westchester’s summer sun can warp aluminum sashes on old CWS windows enough that air sealing becomes impossible without replacing the sash.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely handle a few CWS window issues on your own. A stripped crank handle is a two-screw swap if you’ve already ordered the right replacement. Cleaning debris out of a slider track and wiping down weatherstripping with silicone spray can quiet a noisy window and improve the seal for a few months.

But balance spring replacement is not a beginner’s project. Those springs are under significant torsion tension, and when they let go, they can take a strip of skin or worse. If your sash won’t stay up and you can hear or see a loose coil inside the jamb, leave it alone and call us. The same goes for any impact-rated CWS 9000 window. Those frames are sealed and reinforced differently, and trying to muscle a sash out of an impact frame can crack the frame or compromise the missile-rating you paid for.
